Eight months

Somehow, eight months and 14 hours have passed since we first held a tiny, wailing, writhing newborn in the wee hours of February 2nd. These days, she’s not so tiny, wails very little, but is even more of a mover.

We’re having more fun these days than ever. We’ve figured out a few ways to get good belly laughs out of her, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than sitting around in the evening taking turns making her cackle with delight. Unfortunately for me, she is still just as enamored as ever with her Daddy. We thought she was becoming a little partial to her Mama for a little while, but it must have just been a phase, because she’s certainly over that now. Just last night, the two of us were sitting in the living room floor, happily playing, when Brandon came in from work just a few minutes before bedtime. With her newfound mobility, she didn’t waste any time scurrying all the way across the living room to look for him after she heard his voice. While I would like to see her that excited for me every once in a while, I secretly love watching the two of them. It’s mutual admiration, I guarantee you.

Leyton made another trip to Texas this month to visit grandparents, watch Uncle Baby play football, and have her half-year portraits taken by Nicki Evans Photography. She wore her serious face for her photos, so we didn’t capture many smiles, but she was super cooperative the entire time, so it’s hard to complain. And it certainly wasn’t for lack of effort, nor could we be any more pleased with the pictures.

As far as big changes this month, mobility is probably the biggest. At the beginning of the month, she was already getting anywhere she wanted to go, combining scooting, rolling and lunging, but by the end of the month, we had a full-fledged crawler on our hands. She’s babbling more, her laughs are bigger, and she’s really starting to explore now that her movement is more efficient. We’re big fans of the babbling and laughing, not so much the exploration.

She’s also had quite a few “finger foods” this month, and I, for one, could not be happier about that. Mama is ready to ditch the spoon and the slurpy food. She has loved the “Puffs” and scoops them right up when they land on her tray. Among the list of “real food” she has consumed in the past few weeks, we have:  mashed sweet potato, ground beef, cottage cheese, shredded cheese, banana, avocado, peach, pear, mango, some “yogurt melt” and “crunchies” baby snacks, and probably a few other things I’m forgetting. She has pretty much liked everything, but I think the avocado, banana, shredded cheese and “Puffs” have been her favorites.

By far, her favorite activity is to be outside. She loves watching Dixie Dog, chills in her swing we hung on the porch, or likes to take a spin in Daddy’s new toy (the Ranger). She just soaks it all up when we’re outdoors, which makes Brandon and I very happy. I’m so glad our mornings and evenings are cool enough to enjoy spending a lot of time out there, too.

So yeah, our girl is crawling, eating real food and loving the outdoors. I’m sure I will say this every single month, but life with her gets so much more fun every day. I’m sure one day we’ll miss how small she once was, but for now, we’re loving watching her grow and learn.

Happy Eight Months, Leyton Dean! You really are the light of our lives.
