Daddy duties

As one may expect, changing Leyton’s diaper is not among Brandon’s favorite things to do for his daughter. Not that I can say I am particularly fond of the task myself, but it must be done.

Anyway, I generally just don’t ask Brandon to help out in that department since it’s not what he’s most comfortable doing. I’d rather have him hold/play with/entertain her during her evening awake time while I grab a hot shower anyway. This works for both of us.

But last week when Brandon was kind enough to pass along whatever cold bug bit him, he offered to give Leyton her during-the-night bottle for me. He made this offer several times via text message, after my initial refusal and subsequent acceptance.

When he got home a few hours later, the first thing I said to him was, “You know how you offered to get up with her? You do realize she has to be changed then too, right? Not just fed?”

“Yeah,” he said. “I thought about that later…”

But he did not revoke his offer. And I slumbered peacefully through that nighttime wake-up call. [Thank you, Husband. So very appreciated.]

The next day, I was catching up with a dear friend, and mentioned this very kind act by my husband. “He changed his third diaper,” I said. “It was a big deal.”

She laughed, then asked, “Oh, is three a lot for him to change in one day?”

“Um, no. I meant third ever. In her lifetime. Not the third of the day.”

“Oh.”

I think she was less impressed after that…but I am no less grateful, that’s for sure. Like I said, I’ll take a good shower over a few dirty diapers any day.
