Why we were made for each other

Today I turn 26.

Definitely not one of those milestone birthdays. But I think, for me at least, it’s one that makes you think. On the number line, my age would for sure be rounded up to 30, rather than down to 20. No question. And 26 just sounds so officially “grown up” compared to 25. Like I can no longer have the “young and dumb” excuse. I liked that excuse.

But enough about all that. As my grandpa would say, this birthday is definitely “better than the alternative”.

We had a scheduled family dinner with Brandon’s family last night to welcome his cousins into town, so of course his mom included the whole birthday thing along with it.

Brandon was out working, and walked in about ten minutes after the birthday song. When someone made a comment, he said, “That’s okay. I’ll give her a private solo serenade tomorrow.”

Then last night as we were climbing into bed after Brandon finally made it home sometime just before 10pm, he told me, “I had a really good idea earlier. I was going to get up and make you breakfast in the morning. But I just remembered I’m going to be baling hay then. Then loading two trucks right after.”

“So you remembered you were a farmer?” I teased. “It’s okay. You get points for thought. And really, it’s just another day.”

Well, he kept his promise. He left around 3am to start baling. But not until after he sang the happy birthday song.

Then when I walked into the kitchen at 5:30, my sleepy eyes found this:

That right there is just as good as breakfast to me. Which is why we were made for each other.

And if you know Brandon, you know how impressive it is that he merely had a coherent thought upon waking up in the middle of the night, much less was able to put it on paper and into song.

It certainly made my day.
